Latrobe’s on Royal Wedding Photography

Tucked into the heart of the French Quarter on Royal Street, Latrobe’s on Royal is one of those venues that makes a photographer’s job genuinely joyful. We’ve had the privilege of photographing many weddings at Latrobe’s, and no two have ever felt the same. The venue has a way of taking on the personality of the couple celebrating there, which is exactly what a great wedding venue should do.

Why We Love Photographing Weddings at Latrobe’s

The building is historic and layered. Exposed brick, gas lanterns, curved stone walls, and a dramatic secret staircase (more on that in a moment). The architectural details here feel almost designed for photographs, and we find something new to work with every time we walk through the door.

But what makes Latrobe’s truly special goes beyond the walls. The staff are exceptional, and their priority is exactly the same as ours: making sure the couple gets to be fully present on their wedding day without worrying about a single detail. Every logistical concern is handled, every vendor is coordinated, every moment is accounted for. They work seamlessly alongside the best planners in New Orleans, and for couples coordinating on their own, that support is even more invaluable.

We feel that same way about our own role on a wedding day. So when we work at Latrobe’s, there’s a shared understanding in the room. The couple gets to simply experience their wedding while everyone around them makes sure it unfolds exactly as it should. That’s a beautiful thing, and it’s one of the reasons we love shooting here.

THE CEREMONY

One of the things we love most about the interior Courtyard is that it offers two distinct ceremony orientations, and both are stunning. Couples can exchange vows facing the French doors flanked by antique gas lanterns, warm light, aged plaster walls, and a sense of old New Orleans that feels completely authentic. Or they can turn the setup around, with the deep green doors as the backdrop, framed by a floral arch and candlelit lanterns on either side. Same room, completely different atmosphere. We’ve shot it both ways and honestly couldn’t pick a favorite.

THE SPACES BETWEEN

Latrobe’s gives us something to work with around every corner. The staircase is the showstopper and it gives every portrait a sense of grandeur without feeling stuffy. But the exposed brick walls, the gas lanterns, and the courtyard corners are just as compelling. We shoot editorial style wedding party photos, traditional family formals, and everything in between, and this building handles all of it beautifully. There is always somewhere interesting to put people.

THE LOCATION

IN THE HEART OF THE FRENCH QUARTER

Royal Street itself is a gift. The exteriors of Latrobe’s and the surrounding French Quarter blocks, including Exchange Place Alley, give us endless portrait options. We always plan time to get the couple outside, even briefly, because the French Quarter backdrop adds that little something extra we’re always on the lookout for.

THE RECEPTION

When it’s time to party, Latrobe’s doesn’t miss a beat. The space flips seamlessly. What was the ceremony becomes an intimate quiet area with tables and chairs, while the main room opens up into a full dance floor. It’s a transition that happens so naturally guests barely notice, and then suddenly everyone is dancing.

THE EXIT

And when it comes to exits, Latrobe’s is built for them. Streamers, bubbles, even cold spark fireworks, they handle it all. But the exit we love most is the second line. Step out the front door onto Royal Street with a brass band leading the way and guests spilling onto the sidewalk with umbrellas, and you have one of the most purely New Orleans moments a wedding day can offer. We never get tired of shooting it.

KIND WORDS FROM ONE OF OUR LATROBE’S COUPLES

“We wanted a photographer who had experience working at our venue and who had a cool photojournalism style. We wanted our pictures to look natural and candid, but still professional and creative. Matt and Liz gave us exactly what we were looking for. we could not have had a better experience working with them! -Asha & Aadit
